The Instructor Evaluation (IE) |
The SSI Instructor Evaluation (IE) completes the final stage of Instructor development which began in the Instructor Training Course. A comprehensive evaluation takes a minimum of one day, often two, depending on the number of candidates. SSI IE's have a minimum of one candidate and a maximum of six candidates, giving each candidate the personal attention as needed that you just don't get in IE's from other agencies, who conduct IE's for a minimum of six candidates often with in excess of 70 candidates.
What to take to your IE
You should take everything you need to teach, including, but not necessarily limited to, a full set of instructor quality scuba equipment, your Instructor kit you received on your ITC, a calculator, pens, and your laptop (if you use it to teach or if you have your instructor materials on CD-ROM).
The IE Process

1). The Orientation is to familiarize candidates with all aspects of the IE, to create accurate expectations and to inform you of the schedule.
2). All candidates must pass the Open Water Instructor Final Exam with a score of 90% or higher. It tests a broad range of knowledge and is broken down into three parts:
- Part 1 - general diving knowledge,
- Part 2 - information on SSI, such as Training Standards & Educational System,
- Part 3 - employee training topics, such as professional behaviour, ethics, business knowledge, customer service, customer acquisition and customer retention.
3). You must demonstrate understanding of how the components of the SSI Education System work together to educate and develop divers, and how they benefit divers, instructors and businesses.
4). You must show practical ability to teach academics from the Open Water DIver or Stress & Rescue course and will be evaluated on your ability to:
- integrate teaching, problem solving, group control and answering questions into the presentation,
- provide practical application of the information,
- communicate the subject matter accurately and effectively,
- effectively use visual aids to support the subject matter.
5). Decision Making is a very important aspect of leadership. Instructors make many decisions during a typical dive course and it's critical that they make sound, workable decisions that satisfy the customer, yet do not compromise safety or Training Standards.
You will be presented with scenarios and evaluated on:
- your ability to make decisions quickly and decisively,
- your ability to asses and prioritize all relevant problems, devise at least one workable solution that addresses the most important problems, maintains student safety and Training Standards and satisfies the customer,
- your leadership qualities, your ability to take charge of the situation and provide clear, concise directions when involving others.
6). Your diving skills and teaching abilities in the water will be evaluated by asking you to teach a water session from the SSI Open Water Diver or Stress & Rescue course. You must successfully identify and correct problems and successfully control and supervise the group.
You will be asked to demonstrate leadership-level rescue skills and decision making abilities by conducting at least two rescue scenarios including one full open-water
7). The evaluation process
ends with a final performance review where successful
candidates are awarded the rating Open Water Instructor. If candidates
are not ready to be OWI's, they may remain Associate
Instructors, and continue to practise teaching until
re-evaluation.
Candidates will also be asked to evaluate their ITC and their Instructor Trainer(s) and/or Certifier(s). |
Compare this process with other agencies' IE's and you will find that SSI's Instructor Evaluation offers the most thorough evaluation, more personal attention and the better value for money than its competitors.
Prerequisites
To be eligible for an Instructor Evaluation, you must be an SSI Dive
Control Specialist or Assistant Instructor from another agency
with at least 6 months since your first diving certification,
75 logged dives and and have a current diving medical and training
in CPR and first aid (within the last 12 months).
